{"id":6849,"date":"2022-04-27T09:00:44","date_gmt":"2022-04-27T09:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/floridareview.cah.ucf.edu\/?post_type=article&amp;p=6849"},"modified":"2022-04-27T09:00:44","modified_gmt":"2022-04-27T09:00:44","slug":"faith-test","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/cah.ucf.edu\/floridareview\/article\/faith-test\/","title":{"rendered":"Faith Test"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the counselor asked her<br \/>\ndisciples to gather around the bucket,<br \/>\nher head crowned in clover stems,<br \/>\nwe all wanted to be anointed.<br \/>\nThe Pentecost of chapel steps and snakes<br \/>\nexpelled from little cabins<br \/>\nlined against the trees:<br \/>\nthis was our church, our induction<br \/>\ninto something greater<br \/>\nthan youth group on Wednesday nights<br \/>\nwhere a teen with a bible taught us<br \/>\nto renounce sex, rated R movies,<br \/>\nthe devil in a hot pink romper.<br \/>\nWhen the counselor dipped her hand<br \/>\nin the water we thought baptism, the bonfire<br \/>\nlit with praise hymns and acoustic guitar.<br \/>\nNone of us imagined the goldfish,<br \/>\nits body of shingled scales,<br \/>\nsuch orange iridescent delight.<br \/>\n<em>To be brave for the lord is to<\/em><br \/>\n<em>combat any fear<\/em><br \/>\nHow do you say no to a soulless tail,<br \/>\nthe hand reaching out to say<br \/>\n<em>you could be special too?<\/em><br \/>\nHow she called on us<br \/>\nto grab the soft round and place it<br \/>\non our tongues like communion,<br \/>\nlike the body we cannibalized<br \/>\nweek after week.
