Every mornin I ask Mama,
\nWhy do your eyes look like torn <\/em><\/p>\n

screens?<\/em> I say, Mama\u00a0your flies <\/em><\/p>\n

are gettin in the house again.<\/em>
\nI swat at my ears, then
\nlift the toilet lid and find clear
\nwings floatin, black bellies pinned in
\nstill water. Go on and pee,<\/em> she says. Don\u2019t<\/em>
\nneed to flush \u2018em first.<\/em>
\nWhen Mama scoops her coffee
\ngrounds, she buries a family alive
\nwhile coughin antennae up onto
\nthe shelf of her molars.
\nSays it tickles when she bites down.
\nThe dog snaps at the air.
\nEach time he catches one, we three circle up<\/p>\n

and howl. Our songs blanket the buzz through<\/p>\n

the afternoon and shimmy the ash in the mantle<\/p>\n

urn. By then we\u2019re good and exercised,
\narms quivering from reachin, palms gut sticky.<\/p>\n

Mama, is this called slap-happy?<\/em>
\nShe tells me to go wash up for dinner.
\nShe prays: God, bless this food to<\/em>
\nour body. Bless those who cannot be<\/em>
\nwith us today. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Amen.<\/em>
\nI pinch a maggot outta my
\npie and wonder how many get
\npast our lips unseen.
\nEvery night, as she\u2019s fallin asleep,
\nI lean in slow and close
\nand I tell my Mama,
\nMama, I think we got \u2018em all.<\/em><\/p>\n
