Nocturne<\/h3>\n

No one\u2019s drowned in the boarded up<\/span> well out back in a century. When I<\/span> pry up the nails to let in some sky,<\/span> the voices the moss maintained rise<\/span> like a cloud of bats from the mouth<\/span> of a cave. Hungry to be heard, as<\/span> any static thing, I say to the dead<\/span> you are lucky to be so permanent, so<\/em><\/span> practiced at loneliness, so close, so<\/em><\/span> goddamn close to journey\u2019s end<\/em>.<\/span> Maybe they\u2019ve had enough of this<\/span> living forever. Maybe the mystery<\/span> has never been the where or how,<\/span> but why this need to be forgotten.<\/span> There are many ways to scream so<\/span> no one hears, and each sounds just<\/span> like a child alone again in a night-<\/span>heavy farmhouse, making monsters<\/span> of his shadow and friends with his<\/span> dead, running wild out into the dark<\/span> with only a hammer and his silence;<\/span>  a door he can\u2019t remember opening<\/span> slamming shut behind him.<\/p>\n

The Animal<\/h3>\n

All the cruelties are different, but<\/span> there\u2019s something familiar in<\/span> carrying our children safely through<\/span> the world by our teeth. In pressing<\/span> an empty mouth up to the only part<\/span> of us that nourishes. Sometimes,<\/span> with winter at its deadest, in eating<\/span> our young and starting over again in<\/span> spring. It\u2019s spring, thank god, and<\/span> all we have is an open pasture of<\/span> half-broken foals. A rusty cage for<\/span> the chronic wild. A spindle-legged<\/span> wire fence wrapped in teeth<\/span> separating one neighbor from the<\/span> next. When it comes down to it, son,<\/span> I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll ever eat you. But<\/span> here I am, telling you things you<\/span> already know about love.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
