{"id":337,"date":"2017-03-17T13:41:22","date_gmt":"2017-03-17T13:41:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/floridareview.cah.ucf.edu\/?post_type=article&amp;p=337"},"modified":"2017-03-17T13:41:22","modified_gmt":"2017-03-17T13:41:22","slug":"two-poems-on-florida","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/cah.ucf.edu\/floridareview\/article\/two-poems-on-florida\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Poems on Florida"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Hurricane<\/h3>\n<pre>Naked, floating face down in the tv room\nfilled with seawater seeping from glass doors\nhe had duct-taped against the hurricane,\nthe room a dark aquarium, his white body, bobbing\n\u2014he must have been asleep on the couch, exhausted\nafter a day of battening down the house\nwhen baysurge beached in a swarm of seaspouts\nchurning up the mangrove swamp, the great wave colliding,\nbreaching doors, collapsing walls, wallowing, then\ntumbling back out as winds shrieked off treetops,\nsea slosh sucking up drowned frogs, broken snakes,\nskinned pelicans, dragging leaf muck, sparkles of\nshattered glass, lawn chairs, rolling a dead manatee,\nslopping back through tangles of trees, impaled boats,\nto the seesaw bay sizzling with rain, leaving him\nrocking in a kelp of curtains, arms outstretched\ntowards something in the green cloudy water.<\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>A Miami Moment<\/h3>\n<pre>Just home from work, he\u2019s sitting\nby the patio pond, watching the koi\nwrite their slow signatures.\n\nBeside him: <em>The Miami Herald <\/em>\ngathering humid air, a glass of wine,\nand the cigar he left last night.\n\nA flock of parrots mutters\nin the seagrape tree. The ylang-ylang\nhas put on its evening perfume\n\nand soon the yard will smell like Chanel.\nInside his daughter is baking cookies\nand his wife is taking a pre-dinner snooze.\n\nHe jumps up screaming.\nInside, they yell \u201cWhat? What!?\u201d\nand run out to see him pointing up\n\nat maybe fifty vultures circling,\nwings underlit by the setting sun\nin a swirl of slow turning light.\n\nThe magic in the realism\nnever far away.<\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Naked, floating face down in the tv room \/ filled with seawater&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":338,"template":"","categories":[9,49,119],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-337","article","type-article","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-aquifer","category-literary-features","category-poetry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
