We admitted we were powerless<\/p>\n
this is called visitation.<\/p>\n

I made a family of the towers. The one with a heart in her center and the pointed tips of a hat, the mother. In the summer weeks that were his we rode in the car for an hour, backpacks with coloring books and dinosaurs, quarters for vending machines.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
We followed the power lines out to the river, past signs for evacuation routes. Gas stations with tanning beds, boiled nuts in greasy bags, bathrooms we weren\u2019t allowed to go in. We pretended to work, typing newsletters on typewriters, wearing headsets not connected to the phone.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n

Hours later, my mother returned. She smelled like someone else.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I have a safe place for the child\/ren to stay during visitation.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n *<\/p>\n <\/p>\n To remove<\/p>\n <\/p>\n My mother asked about my dog. A name of some vague relative.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n She would be happier in the countryside, without fences, away from the apartment with two bedrooms and twin beds.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/em><\/p>\n Years later I learned she was bred, litter after litter. When I was sixteen, my mother pointed out the house as we drove by\u2014a fence and a chain, the grass worn away.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n *<\/p>\n <\/p>\n We made a list<\/p>\n <\/p>\n *<\/p>\n <\/p>\n To do so would injure them or others<\/p>\n You and the child\/ren will know when you can spend time together.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n She knew that if her father could not get her through <\/p>\n *<\/p>\n <\/p>\n We continued to take<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I will support the child\/ren as ordered by the court to the best of my ability.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/em><\/p>\n *<\/p>\n <\/p>\n To carry that out<\/p>\n The court will send you a letter<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cDo you think things always have an explanation?\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n *<\/p>\n <\/p>\n To carry this message<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This is not a fairy tale.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I swear that I am able<\/em><\/p>\n to take care of the child\/ren <\/em><\/p>\n I am<\/em><\/p>\n a fit and proper <\/p>\n Works Cited <\/p>\n \u201cFigure 1.
