{"id":149,"date":"2017-02-13T17:30:23","date_gmt":"2017-02-13T17:30:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/devfloridareview.cah.ucf.edu\/?post_type=article&amp;p=149"},"modified":"2017-02-13T17:30:23","modified_gmt":"2017-02-13T17:30:23","slug":"two-love-poems","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/cah.ucf.edu\/floridareview\/article\/two-love-poems\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Love Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The View from Up Here<\/h3>\n<p><em>by Major Jackson<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<pre>At sunset winter mountains reach\nacross the page long as a look of love.\nSometimes my hands want\nall of your syllables.\nI walk in kindness\nwhen you\u2019re around\nwhich is to say I\u2019m feeling Eastern.\n\nI gather myself unto myself\nbecause you hunger\nfor golden peaks.\n\nNight gently offers its diamonds\nwhich we stash in silent mumblings.\n\nWhen you speak, I feel unburied\nyet hear still the dead of my own house.\nNo one cares that I count your eyeblinks.\nNo one cares about all this hard water.\nThe hours are tall as polar caps,\nand I quicken inside your name.<\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>On Hawk Mountain, Vermont<\/h3>\n<p><em>by Didi Jackson<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<pre>I am parting with the sun\nthat like a Greek oracle\ndescends the temple of mountains\nbefore me. Their silhouette\ndarkens to Oxford blue,\nelides the current of the sky\nuntil I no longer see\ncrest or peak.\u00a0 After moving up\nfrom the South, how much should I know\nof coniferous trees or of chickadees\nwho play their winter song of <em>fee bee<\/em>, <em>fee bee,<\/em>\nthe last note toppling an octave from the first\nlike a softly closing door.\n\nThe Northern sky stands so straight,\nit uses the largest pines for crutches;\nthey bend under its weight.\n\nWe have a friend who isn\u2019t happy\nI\u2019m white.\u00a0 With him, though, the road\nis just sampling the sound of the rain.\nSo my husband and I hold hands\nas often as we can,\neach finger erupting a new continent.\n\nBut in the early evening,\nI worry that if pulled over,\nwhen my husband lifts his empty hands\nhe is lifting only his blackness.\nAt this hour a chickadee cries\nin staccato: <em>dee dee dee, dee dee dee.<\/em>\nI wonder how it knows my name\nbefore I look at our marriage\nin the milky evening light.<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A pair of poems celebrating love in a cold climate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":150,"template":"","categories":[9,49,119],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-149","article","type-article","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-aquifer","category-literary-features","category-poetry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
